Takuya was wonderful. We had a group of 6 with several senior citizens and one in a wheelchair. Definitely not the easiest to maneuver through the busy city of Nara and Kyoto. His knowledge and experience of Japan was evident in developing our itinerary to best suit our needs. He went out of his way to make us feel comfortable. We had a traditional Japanese tea ceremony on our final day in Nara. He also went out of his way to show us the best eating spots near our hotel in Osaka. I would highly recommend him. We will definitely use him when we return to Japan.
Discover the Ancient Capital of Japan
Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan for over 1,200 years, and no city in the country holds a deeper concentration of temples, shrines, traditional arts, and living cultural heritage. As your private guide, Takuya Yanagisawa will take you beyond the famous landmarks and into the hidden layers of this extraordinary city.
Together you can explore the great Buddhist head temples and ancient Shinto shrines of the city, tracing the history of emperors, aristocrats, samurai, and Zen monks through the stories that textbooks rarely tell. If you prefer to step off the beaten path, Takuya will lead you through Kyoto’s stone-paved back alleys, quiet moss gardens, and Zen temple grounds that most foreign visitors never discover.
For those who want a peaceful escape from the crowds, Takuya knows a quieter side of Kyoto that few visitors ever find. On the northern fringes of the city, you can walk an ancient pilgrimage trail past traditional farmhouses, beginning at a small Buddhist temple with over 500 hand-carved stone Buddha statues. From there, instead of the famously crowded Arashiyama bamboo grove, Takuya can take you to a hidden bamboo forest nearby where you will have the landscape almost entirely to yourself — and where you can learn the remarkable story of how Kyoto bamboo made Thomas Edison’s first light bulb possible.
Alternatively, in the southern part of the city, the historic district of Fushimi offers a completely different experience. After sake and yakitori at a beautifully preserved former sake brewery, you can continue to a UNESCO World Heritage shrine with striking red structures reflected in a still pond — and stop to grind your own matcha at a traditional tea maker nearby.
Food lovers can enjoy a dedicated Kyoto food tour — including some of Japan’s finest soba noodles, tofu cuisine, and fresh sake from the city’s 24 breweries. And for those looking to combine destinations, Takuya can also arrange a stop in Uji — home of Japan’s finest matcha and the stunning Byodoin Temple — on the way to or from Nara, making for a seamless two-city experience that covers extraordinary ground in a single day.
Every Kyoto private tour with Takuya is a full-day experience, custom-built entirely around your interests, pace, and the stories that matter most to you.

See What My Previous Guests Say
Had two days tour with Takuya-San. One in Kyoto and another one in Nara. Both days were most enjoyable for me and my family of 6. He was very knowledgeable and very attentive to all our needs. He made all the sights come alive for us.
We spent the first day in Kyoto and the second in Nara and Osaka. Takuya showed us traditional sights as well as local life, and he offered us some opportunities to experience special things that we would not have known about had we chosen to go out on our own.
He provided an outstanding tour showing us the highlights of both cities, including the Nijo Castle in Kyoto and the Todai-Ji temple in Nara.
If you are traveling to Japan and are looking for a local that is fluent in English and that will be able to give you an inside look to amazing food, culture, history plus anything else you may want to know about the country, look no further. Takuya is the one for you.
