Takuya was wonderful. We had a group of 6 with several senior citizens and one in a wheelchair. Definitely not the easiest to maneuver through the busy city of Nara and Kyoto. His knowledge and experience of Japan was evident in developing our itinerary to best suit our needs. He went out of his way to make us feel comfortable. We had a traditional Japanese tea ceremony on our final day in Nara. He also went out of his way to show us the best eating spots near our hotel in Osaka. I would highly recommend him. We will definitely use him when we return to Japan.
Explore Nara — National Treasures of Ancient Japan
Nara was Japan’s first permanent capital, established in 710 AD, and today it preserves one of the most extraordinary concentrations of ancient Buddhist monuments, Shinto shrines, and cultural treasures anywhere in Asia. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nara offers an experience of Japan’s ancient civilization that even Kyoto cannot fully replicate.
As your private guide, I will bring Nara’s 1,300-year history alive — from the astonishing Great Buddha housed in the world’s largest wooden structure, to the sacred deer that have roamed freely through the city’s parklands since the 8th century. My deep knowledge of Nara’s Buddhist and Shinto heritage transforms each site from a sightseeing stop into a genuine window into ancient Japan.
Beyond the famous landmarks, I can guide you through the beautifully preserved Naramachi merchant district, quiet hillside temples, and seasonal highlights including the sakura along the Yoshino mountains in spring, or the dramatic autumn colors that transform the park each November.
Nara is also frequently combined with Kyoto as a two-city day tour — something I specialize in, making the most of your available time with expert logistical planning and seamless transitions between cities.
If you stretch your destinations from Nara city, you can discover the Japan’s unique historic connections to Europe. At Horyuji Temple, the first two UNESCO World Heritage site, you learn the influence of European architecture at the oldest wooden structure of the world. And in midday, you can hear the famous bell gong right in front of you.
If you are Sumo fan, you can make your dream come true. Nara is the birthplace of Sumo. At Kehayaza Sumo Museum, you can stand and wrestle in “Dohyo” (sand ring”, built by the professional Sumo staple, regardless of gender.
There are numbers of unique and authentic places you may consider to visit in Nara.

See What My Previous Guests Say
Had two days tour with Takuya-San. One in Kyoto and another one in Nara. Both days were most enjoyable for me and my family of 6. He was very knowledgeable and very attentive to all our needs. He made all the sights come alive for us.
We spent the first day in Kyoto and the second in Nara and Osaka. Takuya showed us traditional sights as well as local life, and he offered us some opportunities to experience special things that we would not have known about had we chosen to go out on our own.
He provided an outstanding tour showing us the highlights of both cities, including the Nijo Castle in Kyoto and the Todai-Ji temple in Nara.
Having Takuya recommended to us by Osaka locals was a highlight of our trip. Professional, knowledgeable of both historical fact and current affairs , combined with his ability to fine tune his tours to our special interests maximized our time in both Osaka and Kyoto.

Nara Private Tour: Ancient Capital, Sacred Deer and World Heritage Temples
A Nara private tour takes you to one of the most extraordinary places in Japan — a city where 1,200 wild deer roam freely through a UNESCO World Heritage park, where Japan’s largest bronze Buddha sits inside the world’s largest wooden building, and where the country’s oldest history is preserved in temples and shrines that predate Kyoto by centuries. As a nationally licensed guide interpreter, I bring this ancient capital to life with the historical depth and cultural context that transforms every stop into a genuine encounter with Japan’s origins.
Located just 45 minutes from Osaka and 35 minutes from Kyoto by express train, Nara is one of the most accessible and rewarding day trips in the Kansai region. Every private tour of Nara I lead is tailored to your interests and pace — whether you want to focus on the temples of Nara Park, the quiet lanes of the Naramachi merchant district, or the ancient shrines of Kasuga Taisha.
Highlights of the Nara Private Tour
- Todai-ji Temple and the Great Buddha — The Daibutsu, a 15-meter bronze statue of Buddha cast in 752 CE, remains the largest bronze Buddha in Japan. The Daibutsuden Hall that houses it is the world’s largest wooden structure. The scale and artistry of both are genuinely awe-inspiring.
- Nara’s sacred deer — Over 1,200 sika deer roam freely through Nara Park, considered sacred messengers of the gods since ancient times. They bow in exchange for shika senbei (deer crackers) — an interaction that is as charming for adults as it is for children.
- Kasuga Taisha Shrine — The tutelary shrine of the Fujiwara clan, Japan’s most powerful aristocratic family during the Heian period, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The stone lantern-lined approach through the forest is one of the most atmospheric walks in Japan.
- Kofuku-ji Temple — The family temple of the Fujiwara clan, with a five-story pagoda that is one of Japan’s most iconic images. The temple’s National Treasure Museum houses one of the finest collections of Buddhist sculpture in the country.
- Naramachi — The preserved merchant district south of Nara Park, where traditional machiya townhouses have been converted into craft shops, cafes, and sake breweries. Quiet, authentic, and almost entirely free of tour groups.
- Isuien Garden — A masterpiece of Japanese garden design incorporating Mt. Wakakusa and Todai-ji’s roof as borrowed scenery. One of the finest gardens in the Kansai region and largely overlooked by standard tour itineraries.
Why Choose a Private Guide for Nara
Nara’s major sites are concentrated in a relatively small area, but the history and significance behind them spans over 1,300 years. On a Nara private tour with me, that history becomes a coherent story — from the founding of Japan’s first permanent capital to the political intrigues of the Fujiwara clan to the extraordinary artistic achievements of the Nara period. I provide the context that connects each site to the larger narrative of Japanese civilization.
Nara combines naturally with Kyoto for a two-destination day, or with Osaka as part of a broader Kansai itinerary. The best seasons to visit are spring for cherry blossoms along the park paths and autumn for the maple foliage that frames the pagodas and garden landscapes beautifully. Winter visits have their own appeal — the deer are calmer, the crowds are thinner, and the temples take on a quiet dignity that is harder to find in peak season. Whatever time of year you visit, a private tour ensures you experience Nara at its best. For booking details, visit the FAQ page or contact me directly to begin planning your Nara private tour.
